Fried Green Tomato
My parents named me Devin, but my friends on trail christened me Fried Green Tomato, or Fried Green for short. My childhood was spent exploring the outdoors with my Girl Scout troop lead by my mother, a naturalist and life-long outdoorswoman. Under her leadership, she instilled in my mind the Leave No Trace principals and in my heart a passion for nature.
After graduating from Grand Valley State University with dual degrees in Film/Video Production and History, I spent a few years immersing myself in the Michigan film industry, but didn’t find the purpose I was seeking there. In 2017, with no backpacking experience and secondhand gear, I thru hiked the Appalachian Trail with my friend Markus. I learned the hard way that I had no idea what I was doing — and that it was the best decision of my life.
After 2,000 miles on trail, I developed confidence in the outdoors through hands-on experience. However, there is always more to learn. In 2021, I will be thru hiking the Continental Divide Trail, closely followed by the Pacific Crest Trail. Achieving my Triple Crown is the short term goal, the long-term goal is to help others build confidence and leadership skills in the outdoors.
